A GREAT PROJECT REQUIRES A GREAT PROCESS
Designing and constructing a project for your home can be a very complicated process. If managed well, this process holds great potential to provide you with beautiful spaces that can provide enjoyment and delight on a daily basis, and that will function well for you and your family for many years to come.
There are two key components to a successful project:
-
Beautiful Architecture – This is the key objective of the project, achieved primarily through quality of design and construction. Think of this as the destination.
-
Beautifully Created – This is how you achieve the objective, and is heavily influenced by the process through which the project is designed and developed. Think of this as the journey.

"As Architects we’re trained to use creativity and rigour to find the best possible solutions.
We’ve turned this approach on the traditional project process itself, to radically improve the course of our projects."

FIRM FOUNDATIONS
Our project planning package is designed as an integral first step towards our unique ‘Constructive Plan’ for managing the process of your project.
We developed this process after many years of working on private residential projects. During this time, we’ve learned to spot the many challenges and difficulties that unfortunately can be all too common when people develop their homes.

Inadequate consideration and planning is like trying to build a wall without firm foundations; not only are the foundations one of the most important components of the wall, but any attempt to change or improve them retrospectively would be very difficult and expensive.
The good news is that these difficulties can be avoided if a positive project process is implemented from concept to completion. This is where the project plan comes in; by first developing a clear and rigorous starting point for the project, you create the perfect conditions for your architect to truly understand your needs and requirements, the opportunities and constraints in which they will be working, and then to design in the most comprehensive and creative way.

THE BRIEF
A key component of your project plan will be your project brief. As part of our project planning package we’ll send you our Project Briefing Guide, a clear & concise template designed to help you capture the full breadth & depth of your objectives & requirements:
-
Compile your key scope and objectives for the project.
-
Articulate the look, feel and design approach of your project.
-
Consider your project budget and how you’ll manage costs.
-
Review your project programme and how to control timescales.
-
Identify the key regulations & standards your project must meet.
-
Understand roles, responsibilities and the team you’ll need.
-
Develop a clear strategy for environmental benefits for you and the planet.

MASTER YOUR ROLE
As a homeowner commissioning a project, you will want to have good involvement from concept to completion. You will review design and project options, select your preferences, receive important project updates and information, and have plenty of your own questions along the way. The role of the homeowner is key to the project process and having the right insights and approach can contribute hugely to your effectiveness and the success of the project.
As part of this package we’ll share with you our Project Planning Masterclass, a quick and concise introduction to a few of the key concepts that you’ll want to consider when making decisions throughout your project. We’ll also share a selection of our guidance documents, designed to answer important questions and provide some key tips to get your project started well.
This approach is not limited to the project planning package, but is integral to our approach across all project stages. By educating and guiding you through your role and the project processes we help you to achieve the best possible process and outcomes for your project.

SUPPORTING STRUCTURE
The project planning package forms the basis of a rigorous planning process that should run throughout the whole project. Our Constructive Plan is a process that monitors the seven key aspects of the project, throughout its course.
Once you have completed your brief, your architect can commence a process of feasibility work to establish and understand the opportunities and constraints for the intended project.
This study would include consideration of:
-
Scope & Objectives
-
Design & Approach
-
Cost & Budget
-
Time & Programme
-
Team & Roles
-
Standards & Approvals
-
Wellbeing & Environment

We call the seven headings our Keystones, and review and refer to them throughout the project. The nature of any design and construction process is that any change to one Keystone will likely have an impact on several, if not all, of the others.
By regularly reviewing and updating the project plan, we develop a robust process to carry each project forward effectively and efficiently.
The Constructive Plan is about working smarter, reducing risk and maximising opportunity for the project.
